Last night, Devorah Heitner, an expert on young people’s relationship with digital media and technology, spoke to a group of parents at Beth El. Dr. Heitner is the author of Screenwise: Helping Kids Thrive (and Survive) in Their Digital World  and founder of Raising Digital Natives. Her mission is to cultivate a culture of empathy and social/emotional literacy. Her presentation covered some of the following issues:

  • Creativity over consumption – not all screen time is equally good or equally bad
  • Mentoring vs. Monitoring – teaching and showing our children the right thing instead on catching them doing something wrong
  • Relationships – sometimes the difficult conversation we don’t want to have is best done in person
  • Reputation – reputations can be ruined through tech/social media but they can also be repaired
  • Time Management skills – figuring out how much time is spent using tech especially work vs. play
  • Clarify boundaries – making sure you create clear definitions for tech use, and your kids stick to them
